The large, forested Lapad peninsula lies to the west of the historic center of Dubrovnik. Its highest peak is the hill Petka. Lapad is now a suburban area with accommodation for tourists, hotels and other tourists services. In the past Lapad was the region of numerous Renaissance summer villas, of which certainly the most famous was the mansion belonging to Petar Sorkocevic, situated at the beginning of peninsula, opposite Gruz. It is situated at the foot of wooded hill near the sea shore. The Institute of Historical Science of the Croatian Academy of Science and Arts is housed nowadays this villa. Church of St. Michael is located in Lapad. The Church of the Virgin of Grace is votive church and owns a rich and interesting collection of paintings of old sailing ships. Dubrovnik University is situated in Lapad peninsula.
